Veterans and community residents attended Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service’s (VNS) 6th Annual Veterans’ Celebration on Thursday, November 7, on the Ridgewood Road grounds of the Hospice of VNS Care Center in Copley. An honor guard ceremony was carried out by Copley American Legion Post 473 and Copley VFW Post 7971, including a bugler playing taps, a 21-gun salute, and cadets from Garfield High School’s NJROTC color guard. Sarah Lowry, Northeast Ohio Regional Representative, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown’s office, welcomed the guests and thanked veterans for their service. Ben Alvarez, MD, Lt. Col., U.S. Air Force (inactive), a resident of Chesterland and Senior Vice President of Physician Alignment and President of Akron General Partners Physician Group, spoke about the significance of Veterans Day. Dorothea Clarke, a resident of Akron, sang “America the Beautiful” and led the group in singing “God Bless America” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Jessi Baughman, from North Coast Pipe Band, also performed.
