Obesity is more than a weight issue – it’s a health issue with long-term effects, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke and certain types of cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that more than 35 percent of Americans are obese and that percentage is projected to grow over the next few years.
A wide range of factors can contribute to obesity, including medical conditions, lifestyle habits and environmental influences. Similarly, treatment should involve a multi-dimensional approach that addresses each patient’s individual circumstances, which could include weight-loss surgery. If you or someone you love is considering weight-loss options, make plans to attend a free information session hosted by Akron General’s Bariatric Center:
Led by surgeon and Bariatric Center Medical Director Walter Chlysta, MD, FACS, each session will give an overview of the different types of weight-loss surgeries offered, who may qualify and the support provided by Akron General’s Bariatric Center before and after surgery. In addition, attendees will hear about the patient journey first-hand from post-operative patients, and an insurance coordinator will be on hand to answer any questions regarding coverage, eligibility and average cost. There is no cost to attend, but registration is appreciated and can be completed by calling 330-344-2462 or by registering online at akrongeneral.org/obesity.
