Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service (VNS) will hold volunteer orientation classes on April 15 and 16 from 12–5 p.m. at the Hospice of VNS Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Copley. Participants are required to attend both sessions. There is no fee.
Volunteers are a crucial part of the hospice team that provides care for every hospice patient. They enhance the lives of patients and their families by providing companionship and support, such as sitting vigil beside a patient’s bed so a family member can rest, or reading aloud to a patient. They also assist with clerical work, make crafts for patient trays, and even weed gardens at the Hospice of VNS Care Center.
There is a specific need for volunteers to visit hospice patients in their homes or skilled nursing facilities throughout Summit, Medina, Portage and Stark Counties. Volunteers are also needed to assist with important functions at the Hospice of VNS Care Center, such as visiting patients, greeting families, clerical projects, fundraising and gardening (April – October). Hospice of VNS matches volunteer interests with program needs.
Volunteers receive comprehensive training covering such topics as the physical and emotional needs of patients and caregivers, spiritual aspects of care, the Hospice concept, comfort care issues, communications skills, active listening, and all aspects of death, dying, and grief and bereavement. New volunteers to the program are mentored by seasoned volunteers.
