Overview

Akron General offers a wide range of surgical services. Whether you require a minimally invasive procedure or a major surgery, our surgical teams are dedicated to providing our patients with excellent care. Learn more about some of our surgical specialties.

Minimally invasive surgery

Our surgeons are experts in the field of laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery. They specialize in performing the most sophisticated minimally invasive surgeries.

Benefits of these procedures include:

  • Smaller incisions.
  • Less blood, less scarring.
  • Less pain during recovery.
  • Some procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.
  • Faster recovery.
  • Shorter hospital stays.
  • Better clinical outcomes.
  • Fewer complications.

Robotic surgery

Highly beneficial to patients, robotic surgery allows skilled surgeons to perform complex medical procedures with great precision using just a minimally invasive approach.

How robotic surgery works

Robotic surgery is performed through a few small incisions in the body and is one of the most accurate and advanced ways to carry out surgical procedures. The “arm and wrist” of the robotic unit mimic the surgeon’s movements while the surgeon’s hands control the movement and placement of those instruments. The Robotic Surgery System also enables highly magnified visualization inside the body (3D image) as well as enhanced dexterity, providing greater precision and maneuverability during the operation.

Uses of robotic surgery

Robotic technology is available at Akron General for a range of minimally invasive procedures, including treatment of cancer, kidney, urological and gynecological conditions.

Potential patient benefits include, but are not limited to:

  • Significantly less pain.
  • Reduced risk of infection.
  • Faster return to normal activities.
  • Shorter hospital stay and recovery time.
  • In many cases, better clinical outcomes.
  • Less scarring.
  • Less blood loss and need for blood transfusion.
Preparing for Surgery

Preparing for Surgery

Blood management

Blood Management is a means of patient care that reduces the need for blood transfusion. Cleveland Clinic nurses and doctors provide Patient Blood Management as a normal part of your care and can help you decide which options regarding management of your blood are best for your condition, as well as when to make the decision to get a blood transfusion. Cleveland Clinic offers Patient Blood Management at all of its hospital facilities located in the United States.

Geriatric Surgery

Geriatric Surgery

As we age, we often need additional healthcare – including surgical care.

Akron General Hospital’s Geriatric Surgery Program is tailored for older adults – 75 years and older with orthopaedic and general surgery needs. The goal of the program is to provide the highest quality, safest care for our older patients before, during and after their surgeries.

Recognized for high quality and safe care

The program received a Level I Comprehensive Excellence Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) by the American College of Surgeons. This recognition is based on quality improvement and patient safety efforts for older adult patients who require surgical services and highlights the unique needs and vulnerabilities of older surgical patients. Akron General is the only hospital in Ohio, and one of eight hospitals in the United States, to receive this high-level designation.

Surgical risks for older adults

Older patients are at an increased risk of postoperative complications, longer hospital stays and slower recovery following surgical intervention. The Geriatric Surgery Program engages patients in decision-making and addressing potential vulnerabilities that may influence surgical outcomes.

Optimizing surgical care

The Geriatric Surgery Program optimizes geriatric surgical care by:

  • Redesigning the surgical experience to focus on goals of care for older adults and their families.
  • Emphasizing the importance of preoperative screening to identify vulnerabilities.
  • Standardizing postoperative care to help prevent serious issues such as delirium and readmissions.
  • Highlighting the importance of team-based interdisciplinary care and communication.
